SDCC 2011 – Day 3 – True Blood vs. Spider-Man

It’s Friday, and to SDCC it means it’s a jam packed day full of TONS of panels, activities, parties and more! Oh, and this is where it gets more and more crowded.

5:15am – Woke up, brushed my teeth, combed my hair, got dressed and snuck out of our room without waking up my friend to head to the Convention Center uber early, to grab a spot in line for The Big Bang Theory panel. Having missed out on the Ringer panel yesterday, I didn’t want to take a chance and do the same for BBT, cause I can imagine how popular this panel could be. And of course, when I get there around 7am, there are already a thousand people in line, and keep in mind, the panel didn’t start until 11am.

Attempting to get a cast autograph for my friends
Also keep in mind, this is my first time attending a panel for BBT. I didn’t get into show until after my first Con in 2008. I knew they were also signing autographs at the WB Booth at the exhibit hall later in the afternoon. Since I already have my Chuck cast autograph from my first Con back in 2008, I wanted to give my two awesome friends back home @KristinStecyk and @TomTomHRGuy a chance to get a signed photo of the BBT cast. Unfortunately, it would not be possible this year, as the WB booth issues wristbands to secure an autograph, and in order to get one, you have to go enter a raffle in another room by selecting a number. If you’re number gets selected, you get a wristband. The WB was trying this out for this out for the first time, as they had numerous problems of people jamming the booth trying to fight for a spot for autographs, which then got chaotic last year I heard.

Anywho, before The Big Bang Theory panel came on, I had to sit through two show panels beforehand: Torchwood and The Walking Dead, respectively. Now, I have never seen either show, but I’ve got many friends who are fans of the shows and tried to get me into them.

My buddy Ryne’s a big fan of Torchwood, and sitting through this panel, watching the cast, I bet he wishes he was there with me. I was unaware who the cast members were, but I’ll tell ya, they put on a really good panel, as they funny, engaging and entertaining, and just having plain fun.

The Walking Dead panel was an intersting one. Going into this, I had no idea what the show was about. I do know that the first season only had about 6-8 episodes, and the show had become such as massive hit for AMC. They brought the cast and crew to the panel to celebrate the success of the first season, and talking about the upcoming second season. It was announced first at the panel that the new season would start in mid-October on AMC. They even showed a trailer too. Overall, despite not seeing the show, it looks pretty interesting, and I think I may have to get my hands on season 1 to watch.

Now, for the main event… The Big Bang Theory panel was awesome! They brought the cast and creators out, as they discussed the last season and what to expect to see this upcoming season. Again, this was my first time attending a BBT panel, and so far I was enjoying it. They also showed a blooper reel of the outtakes from last season as well. The panel lasted about an hour, but overall, fun panel. Too bad I never got a chance to get their signatures.

Turning to Facebook & Twitter

Before the panels started, I had a tough decision to make – what panel should I go to this afternoon? True Blood or The Amazing Spider-Man?  I couldn’t do both, as they scheduled both panels around the same time, but in different rooms - True Blood in Ballroom 20 or The Amazing Spider-Man in Hall H. I was not pleased with the way they scheduled these panels this year, and to top that off, I absolutely could not decide which one to go to, so I turned to Twitter and Facebook. I held a voting process on what panel I should see, and had some great responses, but in the end the score was True Blood 10-8. Thank you to all those that voted!

Anna Paquin & Stepehn Moyer at the True Blood panel, SDCC 2011

Now, the True Blood panel was pretty cool with the cast showing up, talking about what to expect in the current season, as well as they showed a 5 minute preview of what’s to come. Everyone who attended received a True Blood bag that included inside a t-shirt, notebook and a novel. The cast also got to talk a bit about themselves in how they got to where they are now. It was awesome to finally see Anna Paquin live. It was also one of the Con’s most popular panels this year, probably more than Twilight, as the room was packed with every seat in the house filled. Man, I’ve gone too many Vampire panels this year… lol

Everyone who attended the True Blood panel at Comic-Con received this bag of swag!

If I had gone to The Amazing Spider-Man panel….

A part of me wished I did go see The Amazing Spider-Man panel, as from what I saw on YouTube, at the beginning of the panel, before the moderator could introduce the panel, some guy dressed in a Spider-Man costume went up to the fan Q&A microphone and interrupted him by saying how much he loves Spider-Man. The moderator looked annoyed and told him to sit down, but Spidey just kept talking and talking, then took his mask off to reveal that it was Andrew Garfield himself! Wow, great way to start a panel off.

Emma Stone was also there, and boy, she not only looked stunning as always, but was pretty damn funny up there: two rare qualities I like in a woman! Apparently, they showed the trailer, plus another Comic-Con exclusive trailer which showed way more footage from the film, including a look at The Lizard, which pretty much confirms he is the villain of the new rebooted film. Honestly, I’ve always been a fan of Spidey, and I loved the Sam Raimi version (except #3), but was against the new rebooted film for a while, but after watching this panel, I am now sold and looking forward to seeing this new version next summer.

Anywho, after these panels ended, I was wiped from going to all these panels today, so I left the Convention Center and walked around the Gaslamp District to check out some of the offsite events, then went back to my room and meet up with my friend, who was glowing and bragging how he got to meet the creators and the voice cast of the upcoming Batman: Arkham City video game at the WB Booth. I shouted out “Shut the Smurf up! You got in on a WB signing!?!” He showed me his wristband and the signed poster and even told me he was interviewed briefly by the theWB.com. Man, howcome most of my friends have been interviewed by someone at the Con but me?

Oh well, that didn’t matter. I went to bed early because Saturday was a HUGE day for me, the Chuck panel, the very last panel they’ll ever be at, with the showing ending and all.

SDCC 2011 – Day 2 – Back to Hall H

Got up at 4:30am and snuck out the room quietly at 5am without waking up my friend, who was still sleeping. Originally I had 2 premiere tickets for Captain America: The First Avenger to take place at 10am with Chris Evans in attendance, but I gave them up to a couple friends who I would travel with after the Con (more on that later). Instead I met up at the Hall H line with Merissa & Melanie, a couple old friends that I met at the 2009 SDCC in the very same spot for Twilight: New Moon. We were waiting to see the panel for Twilight: Breaking Dawn, Part I.It was awesome seeing them again, it felt like yesterday again.

For those who don’t know, Hall H is one of the biggest rooms in all of the convention center, besides Ballroom 20. Hall H holds about 6000-7000 people. It’s where most of the major Hollywood movie panels are held. Twilight of course is held there. In Twilight’s previous’ con appearance, about 50-100 people have camped outside the Hall just so they can get inside, get good seats and a good glimpse of the cast. This year, it has been reported that about 20-50 people started lining up in front of Hall H, 5 days before the panel! Heck, Comic-Con hasn’t even started either. But when I got there, it looks like security had kicked them out. It’s about time!

Ashley Greene

My encounter with Ashley Greene <3

Anywho, while catching up with my old friends in line, by surprise, a few members of the Twilight cast appeared to meet and greet the fans such as Nikki Reed, Elizabeth Reaser, Julia Jones and my personal favorite Ashley Greene. In past SDCC’s I’ve had encounters with Paris Hilton, Yvonne Strahovski (Chuck), and now I can add Twilight‘s Ashley Greene to the list. It was awesome. Unfortunately, I couldn’t snap a pic with her, as her people told her to move along quickly, but I did snap a really cool pic of her, as seen on the left. Now, this was WAY better than seeing Captain America, don’t you? ;-)

Oh BTW, she’s the main reason why I go to the Twilght panel for those that are wondering why I attend the Twilight panel. ;-)

Access Hollywood were there right in front us and interviewed the stars as well. I believe if you watched the Access Hollywood later that day, you most likely saw me or my friends in the background. Summit Entertainment interviewed my friends as well, as they went around interviewing fans to be featured on the Breaking Dawn, Part I features DVD/Blu-Ray. I’m not sure if they will be featured for sure, despite them signing an agreement form, but I sure hope so. Overall, having a few of the cast surprisingly show up to meet the fans in line was a really cool idea. To top that off, we were also served breakfast as well. It killed a lot of time too.

11:15am - So the panel started. It’s funny, cause Twilight was the first-ever panel I ever attended when I first started going to SDCC, come to think of it. The main big 3 cast of Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner appeared, along with the director, and they talked about the upcoming film Breaking Dawn, Part I. They showed the trailer that we’ve all seen already, but at the same time, they showed an exclusive clip of the honeymoon scene with Bella and Edward. The rest of the cast appeared after the clip to talk about the film, and answered fan questions. On the way into the panel, we were given tickets that had numbers on them, and we had no idea what they were until the end of the panel, where it was a chance to win an invite at the Summit Entertainment VIP party with the Twilight cast. Believe it or not, I almost had the winning ticket, as I was off by two numbers. Ashley even picked out and read the ticket too. ;-)

12:20pm – It was awesome seeing Melanie & Merissa again, so I gave them hugs and had to jet to Ballroom 20, because the Ringer panel was about to start in an hour. I was super-excited to hopefully see Sarah Michelle Gellar in person, as it was not only her return to TV in 8 years since Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but also to see her live, as she rarely makes any live appearances. She first came to SDCC in 2004 to promote The Grudge, where at the time I said to myself that I wanted to go to SDCC, but had no idea how to do it at the time.

Anywho, to my surprise, when I go to the Ballroom 20, there were about over 3000 people ahead of me, leaving me no chance to see SMG and the Ringer panel. It was dissapointing, but also surprising, as in my past 2 Con trips, I was able to go from one big panel in Hall H to another one Ballroom 20, but quickly learned that wouldn’t be the case this time around. Here’s the sad part, each panel room don’t clear the rooms after a panel finishes, so they only let in so many people inside.

TV Guide Fan Favorites Panel

4:45pm – I didn’t get into the Ringer panel, but i did manage to get inside the TV Guide Fan Favorites panel, which was also in Ballroom 20. TV Guide Fan Favorites panel was a panel that featured some of today’s popular TV stars at the panel which included Zachary Levi (Chuck), Johnny Galecki (The Big Bang Theory), Jorge Garcia (Lost, Alcatraz), Kristin Bauer (True Blood), Matt Smith (Doctor Who) and The Vampire Diaries creator Kevin Williamson. It was a realy cool panel, seeing all these TV stars in one room. Zach Levi promoted his Nerd Machine clothing brand there by wearing a t-shirt and hat at the panel.

Now, I originally planned on staying for a Dexter panel in that room right after, but I got too exhausted, so I left to meetup with a couple friends and went out for dinner, then I came back to the Convention Center on my own to explore the exhibit floor more until close.

My friend and I met up at our room at 11pm and shared stories on what we saw at the Con. While he was playing video games on his laptop and going on Facebook, I went to sleep early (around 12:35am), because there was another big panel I wanted to see tomorrow: The Big Bang Theory.

SDCC 2011 – Day 1: Back to San Diego

I know I’m one week late with this post, due to the fact that my internet connection down there during the con was minimal, as I believe almost EVERYONE in San Diego attending the Con were likely using the internet the same reason I was. Another reason was that there was so much happening around the Con that I became way too busy to post, that by the time I got back to my room, I was too tired to type, plus it was late at night, like past 1-2am, and I had to get up at 5am to lineup for panels as well.

I originally had planned to blog about my experience as it happens. Luckily, the memories are still resh in my mind. So, here’s how the next few posts will turn out:

There will be about 5-6 posts about my days at the Con, plus my “Final Thoughts” posts, followed by a post about the Markeitng/PR aspect about Comic-Con.

But to start, this blog will get a little personal as I’m blogging about my personal experience at the San Diego Comic-Con from planning stages to arriving at the Con. So, here it is…

These flags were everywhere across the streets of San Diego.

This is my third time attending the ever popular (and growing) San Diego Comic-Con in 4 years, the first was in July 2008, then July 2009. I missed it in 2010 due to the fact I was working a summer job, plus I had previously went to the Vancouver Winter Olympics 5 months earlier that year, where money didn’t allow me to attend SDCC 2010. Nevertheless, after seeing and hearing what happened at the 2010 Con through the newspapers, online, Twitter and even shows such as Access Hollywood and E-Talk, I vowed to attend in 2011. But I knew it wasn’t going to be easy, considering how popular the Con has become. And yes, I did mention Access Hollywood and E-Talk, SDCC is THAT big. For those who have never been or heard of it, SDCC has been around for 42 years, but has evolved in the last decade. It’s no longer your typical place for “nerds”, heck even many women are attending too (more on that later).

It took three attempts to purchase the passes, as the first two attempts were in Fall 2010, but their servers crashed. I just barely got mine when they reopened in February 2011. I originally bought 3 passes, one for myself and two for my dear best friends. And since then, the countdown to my return to the Con had begun…

I slept over at my friend Monika’s place, because she lived only less than 10 minutes away from the airport, where I lived an hour away, so it was more convenient for her to drive me. I could not sleep at all. I mean, I think the most I slept was 2 hours. I have had sleeping problems lately, but I knew this wasn’t the case this time: I was filled with excitement. She put on the movie Just Go With It for me, and that helped me sleep.

I got up at 4:30am, and was driven to the airport by 5am. As soon as I arrived, the first person I run into unexpectedly was my old classmate from my diploma years and friend Trista and her boyfriend Aaron. It was so awesome seeing her again, and despite us going in different destinations, our departure times were pretty close. So, we spent the time catching up and reminising the good old days of our college diploma years. I miss those days I tell her.

I arrived my stop in Calgary and since it was going to be a long wait, I surprisingly run into Rick Lee from Sonic Radio here in YEG. It was really cool. It was his first time going to Comic-Con, so I gave him some advice and helped guided him, by making his first experience a memorable one. So, we rode the plane together.

When I arrive at my place I was staying, I met up with my friends, checked into my room, and boy it was a tiny room. But that didn’t matter, we were only 10-15min walk to the Con, and we were barely going to be in our room anyways, as we’d be out and about a lot, as shown in the two previous Cons.

The San Diego Convention Center for Comic-Con 2011

As I walking towards the Convention Center, the streets, the shops and the buildings surrounding me all started to come back to my memory again. It felt like I was here just yesterday. When we arrived at the Convention Center, a big smile appeared on my face. Even with three trips, I’m still amazed at how big of a place the Convention Center is.

We went inside to register and picked up our badges. Now, for those who have never been to SDCC, when you pick up your badge, you receive a goodie bag featuring a program guide, a souvenir book and other fine swag provided by sponsors. For us, we received the famous Comic-Con bags from Warner Bros. These bags are extremely popular, as they used to hand them out at their booth in the previous cons, but this time, they handed them out to all attendees, which I guess is to prevent their booth from being so crowded. Each bag has a show/movie/game on featured on it. The ones we got were from The Big Bang Theory, which is perfect, because they didn’t have a Chuck one like in previous years.

Now, tonight was Preview Night, meaning you get to go inside the main exhibit hall and check out the booths before the con opened on Thursday. There were also screenings of TV pilots of new shows set to air in the fall as well. For myself, I just checked out the booths for a couple hours, left, ate dinner and went to bed early, cause I know that I won’t be getting much sleep in the nights to come.

There will be more to come, but in the meantime, have a look, and let me know what you think!

And yes, I will have a new blog post article sometime next week too!

Using Linkedin

Ok, now I’m going to turn my attention to Linkedin. Unlike other popular social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter, Linkedin (the way I see it) is basically a professional version of Facebook, for careers and jobs. Your profile page is almost like a resume, detailing the places you worked at, went to school and your career goals and objectives.

I have had a profile on there in the last 4 years, and despite getting quite a number of connection requests through the years, only in the last year have been using the site more actively. Some say that Linkedin is the new business card or the new resume. For me, I don’t think it will replace the resume, but I do think it’s a great additoinal tool to have to add to accompany your resume. And of course, it’s great to have to make connections, and find jobs in your desired field too.

My favorite feature of Linkedin has always been the recommendations, which gives the user to boost their achievements and credibility, by having their colleagues, co-workers, classmates, etc. endorse them, giving them an idea by detailing their strengths and acheivements, and how they will benefit a future employer. It’s something that expands on what a cover letter and a resume can’t do.

I truly believe that the site will be a really effective tool for me to have as I continue to develop my career.
Although most of my connections are just beginning their careers or current students, I also believe they will be useful to me down the road as they will be in the workforce and developing their careers as well, making them great networking connections.

More Movie Marketing – ‘Green with Envy’

Green with Envy poster

By the time you read this post and watch the trailer link below, it won’t have that surprise effect on you like it did for me when I first watched it, but I really want to weigh on my take on it.

While browsing my Facebook and Twitter updates, I’ve been seeing posts linking to this new movie trailer titled Green with Envy, which stars Jason Siegel and Amy Adams.  As I’m watching it, I’m thinking to myself “Oh, this is probably another typical romantic comedy movie”, then they ran through the stars of the movie: Jason Siegel, Amy Adams, Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy…

Woah,  woah, wait! what? There’s Muppets in this movie? …turns out so.

It also turns out that Green with Envy is actually the new Muppet movie simply titled The Muppets, which opens this November.

It’s a really awesome and smart trailer they made to definitely hype up the return of the Muppets to the big screen. It’s also a really sneaky and brillaint way of teasing the audience too, thinking they were watching a trailer to a romantic comedy.

At the end of the trailer, they encouraged people to spread the word of the trailer on Twitter, using the hashtag #GreenwithEnvy, which is how I first stumbled onto this trailer.

The viral marketing for this film has already begun as there are pages for Green with Envy on Facebook, YouTube and iTunes’ trailer page, along with a poster for Green with Envy as well.

So, what do you think of this campaign? Pretty cool, huh?

How Twitter Saved ‘Chuck’

Zachary Levi (Chuck) & Yvonne Strahovski (Sarah). Chuck gets renewed for a fifth season, thanks to Twitter

As many of you that know me quite well, you probably know that one of my favorite TV shows currently on the air is the NBC action-comedy spy series Chuck. I thought I’d make a post about this today, as the show has been making news headlines lately and trending on Twitter of it’s recent renewal for a fifth (and final) season.

Now, for the record, I’m NOT writing this post to show off how much of a fan I am of the show. I’m writing this because this is somewhat marketing/PR related, and the creativity of the grassroots efforts the fans have made to save the show, has fascinated me so much, that it actually worked! Also, it’s the season finale of Chuck tonight as well.

Chuck was never really a ratings juggernaut like other shows, as fans of the show are always in this position every year since season 2, working effortlessly on trying to convince NBC to keep the show going, but always had such a loyal fanbase, unlike anything I’ve ever seen before for TV Shows.

Previous efforts to save the show included the old fashioned letter writing campaign to the network, but with the power of the internet, fans can now connect themselves closer to the network and to each other by writing e-mails, starting online groups, petitions, to even thinking outside the box by all buying a footlong sub from Subway on the night of the season 2 finale [LINK] . It worked by the way, as the show not only got awarded a third season, but also signed on Subway as a main sponsor of the show.

Fast forward 2 years later, and we’re in season 4 of the series. The show still have that huge and loyal fanbase, but it’s just not translating enough into high numbers for the ratings, as it’s only getting about less than 4 million per episode. Of course, that puts the show in danger of cancellation again. The letter writing campaign can only work so many times, so what do you do to save the show once again?

Well, a fansite called “We Give a Chuck” appeared a month ago and came up with a Twitter campaign [LINK] to save the show, by not just aiming at NBC, but to the show’s advertisers that they exist. Using the hashtag #NotaNielsenFamily, the fandom banded together in hopes of letting Chuck‘s many advertisers that the oft-criticized Nielsen ratings system doesn’t speak to what they claim the true numbers the show is really pulling in.

Throughout the last month, the group and fans would tweet on Monday nights (when the show airs) during commercial airtime to advertisers, letting them know they saw their ad during Chuck, mainly in hopes of getting their attention. [LINK] For example:

“@Tide just saw your ad on @NBC’s #Chuck. Thx! You support Chuck, I’ll support you PS-I use the to-go stick all the time! #NotANielsenFamily”

The result: it worked. Diet Pepsi’s Twitter account responded to the outpour that evening, saying:

Wow! #chuck fans are awesome! Thanks for all the support!!!! #notanielsenfamily.

And as a result, the show gets renewed for one more season!

My thoughts?

I found this latest campaign to be really smart and totally thinking outside the box, while at the same time taking advantage of social media as a tool. I remember checking Twitter thorougly last Monday night during the latest episode and was amazed to find so many tweets from viewers tweeting the commercials they saw during Chuck. It’s a very brillaint campaign, as the group realized that there’s more than just the network people to get through to, and because Twitter is so powerful, as it allows fans to connect directly with advertisers, as they are the main key to reach to more than just the network that airs the shows. This also benefits the advertisers, as they know directly and instantly if they’re ads are reaching out to them, as well as how much of an impact it has to them too.

The success of this campaign has proven how much social media can be so powerful and have such a great influence. I can picture a campaign like this to be used again in the future, as it shows that it’ll take more than just bombarding the network with letters and e-mails to save a show from cancellation.

And finally, Thank you fans! You’re all awesome! Thank you NBC for bringing this show back for one more season, and giving it a chance to wrap it up the way it should be. And yes everyone, I did my part too, see: #NotaNielsenFamily :-)

Viral Marketing at the Movies – Super 8

For my first post, I’m going to discuss viral marketing at the movies. I absolutely love viral movie marketing, as it combines both my love for movies and viral marketing. We’ve seen some films being promoted virally online in the recent years, using some interesting tactics to build interest and curiousity towards a film. Sometimes, viral campaign efforts have lead to the successes of some films as well.

For those who don’t know, Viral Marketing is a form of marketing or advertising of a product or service that is mainly done online, and also uses the analogy of spreading like a virus, except it is information that’s being passed on from one person to another and so on. The information could be a link, a video, an article, flash games or a website/blog. Viral Marketing is a way of spreading a marketing message indirectly through word of mouth and referrals, and encourages people to pass along the message to others, but at the same time build brand exposure and awareness or achieve other marketing objectives. The cost of a viral campaign is low, but gives a high rate of exposure to the target audience.

Super 8 film reel

Picture from FirstShowing.net

JJ Abrams and his team uses viral marketing again with his upcoming sci-fi film, Super 8. Now, just like Cloverfield (also from Abrams), there’s a ton of mystery surrounding the film’s plot that’s been kept under wraps since the teaser trailer was first unveiled before Iron Man 2 last summer. Also, like Cloverfield, there has been some online viral marketing done, in revealing more about the film.

In the viral campaign so far for Super 8, some major publications such as magazines and blogs, have reported that they’ve received a package that contains a vintage looking (circa. 1979) Kodachrome 40 film reel, used for Super 8 cameras. The package also contains a memory stick that shows bits and pieces of a black & white video, showing a laboratory or a presidential looking person. Each publications have received their own piece of the video as well.

This also ties in with their Editing Room (pic below) from the film’s official website, as each film reel sent out, contains a code to enter at their at the film’s editing room viral site, which unlocks more footage to the site. When you click on the switches, you can watch the video of what’s been unveiled so far. From what I understand, when all the film strips are unlocked and put together, it’s apparently supposed to reveal some information about the film.

the editing room from the SUPER 8 official site

Personally, I’ve always found movie viral marketing in to be smart and pretty cool, as there’s some interactivity with users, as it draws you into their world, which can help build interest, intrigue and excitement to see a particular film. Some of my personal favorites viral campaigns in the past were The Dark Knight and Cloverfield, where they’ve created fictional websites alluding to places and products as seen in the films, and even puzzles to unlock a clue or clips. I find Viral Marketing to be really effective tool for marketers to build awareness and excitement for their products, and if it’s done in the right way, it can also be pretty fun for both the user and the marketers as well.

Super 8 iPhone App

Also, for those who own iPhones, you should download the Super 8 iPhone App from Apple’s App Store. The app is where you turn your iPhone into a vintage Super 8 film camera as seen in the film. Using this app, you can make your own vintage style videos, add effects such as sepia, B&W, scratch and dirt, frame shake and even some lens effects.  It’s free to download, but only available for a limited time.

Welcome to my Blog! (finally)

Hey everyone!

I want to finally welcome you all at long last to my all-new blog, hosted by WordPress. I’ve been wanting to blog again after a 5 year absence, and even had this blog in development for more than a year, but just had this blog sidetracked due to other higher priorities happening in my life.

So finally, my blog is here. I’ll be blogging about things and happenings that I find interesting, as well, I’ll be tweaking up this site, and adding various works to my portfolio section. So, stay tuned for more!
